Getting to work - written on 9/5/2011

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that we can't get our blog going yet due to Chinese government restrictions on social media. We need to get clearance from headquarters in Colorado and that won't happen until at least Tuesday because of the holiday. However, we can send and receive email so would love to hear from you.

Sunday we spent the day with our friend Kristina who lives here. We went to the market and bought fresh vegetables and fruit. Peaches are in season right now. They are good and cheap. Then off to the supermarket to pick up supplies, then church which was wonderful, then lunch at a Muslim restaurant, then a long hike to know the neighborhood and finally ended the day with a 15 course meal! Oh the food is good here!

Sleeping has not been so good. My body keeps waking up at 1:00am. Last night I was able to finally go back to sleep and didn't wake up until 6:15 so that was good. Bob is sleeping better.

Today was Labor day at home which I had forgotten about til I sat down to write this. Hope you all had a good day. The end of summer which is hard to believe. It's been beautiful weather here, sunny and in the 80's. We started our day with a early morning run and it was interesting to see all the people out in the park doing tai chi at 7am. I'm going to join in one of these days. I'm sure I can talk Bob in to it (ha) or at least Chris when she comes.

We spent most of the day talking about redesigning the great room and a few other rooms as well on the first floor. Everyone has an opinion and there are a lot of people working and living here. It's like a little mini community. Lots of great people willing to help. We went to the B & Q which is Beijings version of Home Depot to scout out the supplies for building and painting. Building supplies are different but adequate. Paint supplies have a lot to be desired and paint is so expensive, about 3 - 4 times what we would pay at home, AND the brushes are awful, AND they can't color match, AND they don't have exterior primer. The workers didnt have a clue what I was asking for, they thought I was crazy. We can tell that it's going to be a challenge to find what we need here but we'll have lots of fun trying. We spent at least a half an hour trying to find each other in the B&Q so tomorrow we get cell phones. Tomorrow will be furniture and fabric shopping. Sounds like fun to me. Bob will either come with
or work in the garden cleaning up and seeding grass. There are LOTS of projects around here.

Take care everyone and write back, we love to hear from home.
Sherri and Bob
